Weather: Cool, windy and rain showers.
Projects: Marsh Harrier.
Today the conditions for Marsh Harrier monitoring were less than desirable with the birds focus on hunting as opposed to displaying. However a male was seen over Källviken and also a male hunting over the marsh at Rysjön and another over Nyängen reedbed.
A meeting was also held with Jan Sondell to demonstrate the focuses of the projects he is running this season.

Weather: Windier, though not too strong, overcast and cold yet dry.

This morning was spent observing the Marsh Harrier behaviour on Åslajön and Fågelsjön. Over Åslajön, 3 males and 3 females were observed, with one dark male displaying flying for half an hour, unfortunately without finding a female, better luck next time buddy!

This morning I headed to Fiskingemaden in order to survey the area as part of the Goose Census. I found the area had grown up a lot since last year, the reeds obscuring much of the lake here which is bound to make the Wetland Census that begins later this week a bit trickier. Whilst I was here I also took the opportunity to observe the Marsh Harriers frequenting the area.

The 2016 season has begun, and I am back again to run the earlier spring projects before the arrival of other staff members in a couple of weeks. Alongside setting up paperwork for the season, and with the warm pleasant weather prevailing, I rode to Rysjön this morning to gauge how many Marsh Harriers were currently hunting here and after dinner I went to Åslaholmen to do the same.

Tits day. Blue tits were singing around from very early, presumably migrating since there was no recapture today.

It’s been the slowliest morning so far, probably. However, low numbers of birds give me the chance to use skull ossification as criteria to properly age a treecreper as an adult (2nd calendar year or more). There was a recapture of a Song thrush which was ringed last year.

Bird activity in Ässön took place only in the firs two hours. No birds falling into the nets later than that, not even the loyal siskins which have been falling in good number through the whole September (only four today). Wind during the last two hours did not help neither.

Vallen was slow today. Some thrushes were roosting during the night in the bushesh but got scare when setting up the nets. Too bad none of them fall into the nets. We got a good insight of the reed buntins with its new brand winter plumage and a couple of Bearded Reedling was so nice to allow us to observe and manipulated them. Some wrens and dunnocks are still around.

We went to Banvallen today, with a bit of wind in the morning and increasing through the day. It was a slow day, but not bad regarding species; diverse morning. We were pleased to have a Marsh tit after a while and a beautiful Male of nuthatch as the last bird, which came to say goodbye to SSL.

Ässön was interesting today, but we had to stand for being wet. We got the surprise of two white wagtails falling into the nets from the group which always wander over the bridge. Thrushes migration over the ringing site ignore the taping, but siskins were as pleased as always to here our taping. At 10:30 the dropping became into the perfect storm, which catch us during taking down nets.
